Aiming at fostering and promoting Germany as a centre of innovation, the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection (BMELV) yearly awards the “German Prize of Innovation in Horticulture” for outstanding and exemplary innovations in horticulture.

This year the prize was awarded for a service package that supports plant breeders in propagating and marketing their novelties, emphasizing that innovation can not only originate from competition but also from a close cooperation of small and medium-sized companies.

Winner in the category „Cooperation/Business Organisation“ is the family-owned biotechnology enterprise Bock Bio Science from Bremen that offers its service package „Bock TC Services“ for the propagation of selected breedings, thus assisting to discover hidden treasures developed by European breeders. The main focus is the fast, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly propagation of clones using tissue culture.

The highly competitive market for ornamental and crop plants is exposed to constant change and new varieties have to fulfil the demand for superior products at fair market prices.

The process of developing and marketing a new product is elaborate, time-consuming, and poses a multitude of challenges. Many small and medium-sized horticulture companies possess high-quality own breedings and selections that are available in the market only in small quantities as the mother plants can be reproduced slowly by division and the sowing does not produce a sufficient quantity of homogeneous offsprings. It is not uncommon that valuable small populations are destroyed by diseases or pests. Reproducing such plants by tissue culture in large quantities within short time offers those companies new marketing potential and ensures their survivability in an international market that constantly demands for novelties but is at the same time interested in marketable large quantities.

Apart from the specific development of cloning protocols and the exclusive production of young plants, Bock Bio Science offers other services such as the selection of healthy mother plants, phytopathogen diagnostics and elimination, rejuvenation of woody species, and the conservation of valuable varieties.

The company posses its own state-of-the-art laboratories, large growing rooms, a modern LED light system for the development of light protocols as well as well experienced and highly qualified scientific personnel.

The service package furthermore comprises the scientific and technical consulting and the support in the field of property rights (national and international plant breeders’ rights).

The well-respected award was presented to the managing partners of Bock Bio Science, Mr Stephan von Rundstedt and his wife, Mrs Friederike von Rundstedt on the occasion of the German Horticulture Day by the Central Association for Horticulture (ZVG) that took place at the Federal Horticultural Show BUGA 2011 in Koblenz on Friday, the 2nd of September 2011.

Proposals for the cloister garden.
Museo Provincial de Lugo – Spain (MPL).

Conditions
Convening of the contest of ideas for the landscape intervention in the convent’s cloister of San Francisco that is now part of the premises of the Museo Provincial de Lugo which belongs to the Diputación de Lugo.
Object of the contest
The Vice-President of the Diputación Provincial de Lugo and the Museum convene the first contest of ideas to restore the landscaping of the original San Francisco convent cloister located in the provincial capital’s urban area.

Background
This contest of ideas arises from the technical domain of MPL to reward those professional proposals that bring innovation to the enclosed space from different creative fields for gardening and landscaping. It is intended to meet a series of contents that were lost with the historical development.
Field of activity, proposal goals, and documentation available
The field of operation is confined to the garden areas of the cloister, divided into four quadrants by flagstone paths that draw a cross in the horizontal section with a well in the center. The cloister is enclosed by the convent’s architecture: open galleries with semicircle arcades supported by columns. The project area is approximately 400 square meters.
Object of the proposal
Proposals should consider the relationship between architecture and garden areas as a whole, contributing to the rehabilitation of an area using artistic ability.
Proposals must be respectful of the integrity of the architecture and artifacts deposited in the cloister.
There is documentation available to participants.

As a culminating project of Designing the Parks — a partnership to promote well-designed public parks in America — Parks for the People invites student and faculty teams to help build a common foundation of design principles for these extraordinary sites as the U.S. National Park Service embarks upon a new century of park design.

Participating schools will work with park administrators to create model solutions for seven park sites in each geographic region of the U.S., and use these design paradigms to create a stronger national identity for our open space ideals. Throughout the competition, schools will have an opportunity to engage with the Park Service and its rich cultural and historic assets, including access to park leadership, in-depth encounters with park sites, and the chance to build long-term relationships with park staff and resources.

World Water Week is hosted and organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and takes place each year in Stockholm. The World Water Week has been the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues since 1991.

World Water Week niche and theme

Each year the World Water Week addresses a particular theme to enable a deeper examination of a specific water-related topic. While not all events during the week relate to the overall theme, the workshops driven by the Scientific Programme Committee and many seminars and side events do focus on various aspects of the theme. The themes change each year, but each fits within a broader “niche” that covers several years. The grouping of
themes within a niche is designed to develop a long-term perspective on a broad yet significant water and development issue. It also ensures that each year builds upon the previous years’ outcomes and findings.

The current niche for 2009-2012 is “Responding to Global Changes”, which looks at the potential and necessary responses in water policy, management and development to address pervasive and increasingly impacting global changes. The themes within the current niche are:

2009: Accessing Water for the Common Good

2010: The Water Quality Challenge

2011: Water in an Urbanising World

2012: Water and Global Food Security (tentative)

Browse the website: http://www.worldwaterweek.org/ to see the Thematic Scope for 2011 on Water in an Urbanising World, the workshops covering different aspects of the theme, and seminars and side events on many water-related issues.
