The first sections of the Brooklyn Bridge Park greenway have opened, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today, connecting Old Fulton Street to Pier 2 along the East River with a 2,000-foot bicycle and walk lane. The 30-foot wide greenway, which is being developed in conjunction with the Brooklyn Bridge Park, will stretch approximately 14 miles along the waterfront when completed. An additional five acres of park space was also opened today at the Brooklyn Heights recreation space. Once completed, Brooklyn Bridge Park will be roughly 85 acres in size, according to Bloomberg. So far, the city has committed $194 million to the project, while the state has contributed $85 million

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a component of the Administration’s Waterfront Vision and Enhancement Strategy to revitalize New York City’s more than 500 miles of waterfront. Since 2002, more than 500 acres of new parkland have been opened.

“The opening of the next five acres of the park makes it an even more attractive place to visit, and moves us one step closer to our goal of building the full 85-acre park,” Bloomberg said.

In order to provide continuous public access to the portion of the park already open at Pier 6 on Atlantic Avenue, the new section is connected to an interim path on the uplands of Piers 2, 3 and 4. Such connection includes a two-way bike lane and a 10-foot wide pedestrian path.

The new sections of the park include a tidal salt marsh with an adjacent seating area composed of granite blocks salvaged from the old Willis Avenue Bridge in the Bronx. The tidal marsh will be home to marine and aquatic bird life.

Fresh water gardens and a series of weir bridges were established in Pier 1. . The ravine-like setting is the park’s most pastoral landscape and many different kinds of flowers and bushes were planted there.

“This opening highlights two wonderful aspects of Brooklyn Bridge Park – its scenic beauty and its multi-faceted functionality. The salt marsh and fresh water gardens are extraordinary scenic amenities that also serve important environmental and sustainability functions,” said Brooklyn Bridge Park President Regina Myer.

This book presents 23 projects that reveal the surge of creativity and discussion surrounding the designed landscape in a broad, principally urban, international context. In the last 20 years, many significant new public spaces have been created for sites that have been reclaimed from conflict, environmental degradation, and abandonment.

The projects, found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, were selected for their outstanding design, and for their variety of contexts, materials, scale, and types of spaces. This fully illustrated volume includes an essay by Peter Reed, Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, that demonstrates how these innovative projects expand the definition of the modernist landscape while responding to a variety of conditions such as program, social function, and the transformation and reclamation previously industrial areas. The essay is followed by a full-color plate section featuring the selected projects. Catalogue entries for each project provide a succinct description of the site, its transformation, and design concepts illustrated by photographs, drawings, and models.

Includes work by George Hargreaves, Martha Schwartz, Peter Walker, James Corner, Peter Latz, Ken Smith, Tom Leader, and others. Essay by Peter Reed.

The APLD International Landscape Design Awards recognizes excellence in the field of landscape design. For 2010, the entry process will continue to be electronic and the entry categories have been expanded to allow for recognition of show gardens. APLD also recognizes that sustainability is an increasingly necessary component in all landscape design, and it will be considered in the judging of all pertinent categories.

The best entries, judged by a distinguished international jury, will receive a gold award. Other deserving entries will receive a merit award. The judging criteria will total 100 points. A score of over 90 is needed to be awarded gold, and a score over 80 is needed for the merit award. There can be more than one gold, or merit, in each category. This places the entrants in competition within the bar of excellence, as opposed to competition within the pool of entries.

From the gold award entries, the judges will choose the 2010 APLD International Landscape Designer of the Year. Awards will be presented during the awards banquet at the 2010 APLD International Landscape Design Conference in Dallas, Texas, in September 2010. The APLD International Landscape Designer of the Year will receive free conference registration.

An additional award, the Distinctively Better® Plant Design Award, sponsored by Monrovia Growers, will be chosen from the winning entries. The award recipient will receive $2,000 worth of Monrovia products. APLD would like to thank Monrovia for its continued support of the International Landscape Design Awards. The APLD Student Landscape Design Awards Program recognizes excellent student projects in landscape design. The program builds upon landscape design projects already assigned by an educational institution
