2009 ASLA Annual Meeting & Expo
The Premier Event for Landscape Architecture Professionals
September 18 – 21, 2009
Lakeside Center at McCormick Place
Chicago

Landscape architecture professionals from around the globe will gather September 18 – 21 in Chicago for the ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo. Changing leaves, mild temperatures, and innovative design make Chicago a perfect location for landscape architecture professionals to assemble. The meeting will feature more than 125 education sessions, field sessions, and tours over four days. Register now for the most important landscape architecture event of the year.
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) reports the registration for their 2009 annual meeting in Chicago, September 18-21, is one-third higher than the 2008 event in Philadelphia at the same time last year, and well ahead of the 2007 San Francisco meeting pace. The San Francisco meeting had 7,000 attendees, the largest gathering of landscape architecture professionals in the ASLA’s 110 year history.
“Our surveys tell us that the top two reasons attendees register are the education session topics and the speakers,” said Nancy Somerville, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA. “This year’s meeting offers more than 125 education sessions featuring a faculty of more than 250 leading experts from across the country and around the world.”
The meeting is titled “Beyond Sustainability: Regenerating Places and People,” a nod to Chicago being the U.S. leader in green roofs. Chicago regularly appears among the top choices in ASLA surveys on meeting destinations.
Ms. Somerville termed Chicago a living laboratory for landscape architects to explore landscape architecture, planning and urban design practices.
If the rate of registration continues as strongly as in previous years, more than 7,000 landscape architecture professionals, product manufacturers and service providers will be in Chicago this September. Highlights for attendees include:
- An economic outlook for the industry by noted economist Kermit Baker, a senior research Fellow at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies and chief economist for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
- An EXPO featuring more than 400 products and services for landscape architecture professionals. The EXPO consistently ranks as the best event of the meeting by attendees.
- The opportunity to earn more than 21 professional development hours, many of which will be accepted by the AIA, the American Institute of Certified Planners and the state licensing boards of New York and Florida.
- “Inside the LA Studio” sessions with the renowned German landscape architect Herbert Dreiseitl and award-winning American landscape architects Ken Smith, ASLA, Raymond Jungles, FASLA, and James Burnett, FASLA.
- Networking opportunities and employment counseling through ASLA’s annual JobLink LIVE program.
The September issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News will be dedicated to the ASLA Chicago meeting and will highlight the works of landscape architecture firms of Illinois.
