Sm03 – PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH INFLUENCES ON GARDEN CULTURE AND OPEN SPACE DEVELOPMENT

WELCOME
Portuguese and Spanish influence on the development of cities and urban horticulture has been significant for many places around the world, particularly for the Americas. In some cases (for example South East Asia), this influence vanished over the time, or became modified within regional cultures. In other cases, the Muslim heritage became meaningful. Out of this came a complex system of multifaceted cross-cultural relations between the garden cultures of those countries.

The seminar will discuss recent scholarly studies addressing the questions of Portuguese, Spanish and Muslim influence on gardens, parks and open spaces, horticulture and use of plants, designed landscapes in the Americas -with a special emphasis on Brazil- and South East Asia from the 15th to the 21st centuries.
